Hi Everyone,
The
shelter addition becomes easier and easier to visualize as rooflines and
bathtubs are added. The skylight is in and the light it adds to the
Advocate’s Office is remarkable. Our input on colors and material selections
have gone to Bruce Hayashi, the project architect for final coordination.
The timeline for completion has been extended, as often happens with remodels and new construction. The anticipated finish and DAWN acceptance is scheduled for October 7th and the Construction Manager believes that is easily achievable, notwithstanding any unforeseen complications. The delay, about one month at this point, was due to the required fire sprinkler system details and county approval. We anticipate approval to go smoothly from this point. In addition, we have worked out the details for our data ports, phone system and alarm system. We are fortunate to work with community partners and vendors who go the extra mile to make this work easily for DAWN.
The front door remains inaccessible until the front porch and ramp can be completed. Shelter Director Judit and all of Shelter Staff have been remarkably resourceful and positive in making access to shelter welcoming and positive throughout this extended loss of the front entry.
Good news right now is that the phone system will only be down half a day when the changeover finally takes place. Work-arounds for that time are already in planning.
We will keep you updated as the addition comes to completion and the next phase involving the existing space remodel begins, anticipated to happen around August 24th. Judit is planning to work with volunteers who will provide meals during that time, using the living room as the eating area.
As always, DAWN Staff, the residents and all our partners in the project have been amazingly positive and flexible.
Since
its opening 18 years ago, DAWN’s 25-bed confidential facility has been near
maximum capacity EVERY DAY. We have seen an increase in clients seeking
services through our crisis line and requests for our emergency shelter have
doubled over the past five years. In 2009 we were forced to turn away 24
requests for shelter for every one survivor we were able to house.

We are able to move forward to significantly increase our capacity because we are surrounded by extremely generous community partners who have joined with DAWN to eliminate domestic violence. Already the organizations joining the effort are an amazing anonymous donor and long-time friends of DAWN: ConAm Property Management Corporation, Washington Multi-Family Housing Association, Employees Community Fund of The Boeing Company, HDS Supply, Seattle Apartment Finder, Nordstrom Inc., Griffith Flooring, Sokiko Women’s Club, Beaverworx Roofing, Gonzales Construction and D.V. & Ida J. McEachern Charitable Trust.

Just as we answer the phone for 1,600 women in crisis each year, we are anxious to connect and talk with you as you consider this commitment to help women and their children break free from violence.
1. In comparison, our turn-away rate in 2004 was 12 requests for every 1 served – half of what it was in 2009.
