National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time when our Nation honors domestic violence survivors and inspires action to stop the cycle of abuse. Each day this month we at DAWN encourage you to do something new to honor National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You can help change the future for a victim who may need help in your community.

To bring heightened awareness of the plight of survivors everywhere, and to encourage action in communities across the country, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence created a “Day of Unity” 28 years ago. What started as a single day to honor victims grew into a series of events bringing together domestic violence advocates across the country. In October 1987, the first National Domestic Violence Awareness Month was formally observed.

The purple ribbon was adopted as the Day's symbol of hope and empowerment. It was the favorite color of a woman murdered by her batterer years ago when he was on temporary furlough from jail. The scope and impact of the month has grown each year and today, thousands of individuals participate in events across the country.
